The term "Hospice" can be traced to European history when it described a place of shelter and rest for weary or sick travelers on long journeys. The term was first applied to specialized care for dying patients in 1967, when Dr. Cicely Saunders established St. Christopher's Hospice in a residential suburb of London. Today, "Hospice" refers to a concept of compassionate care, delivered in a variety of settings; in a patient's home, freestanding patient facilities, nursing homes and hospitals. Hospice emphasizes palliative rather than curative treatment, choosing quality rather than quantity of life. Support is offered through a personalized plan of care to ease the many different types of pain facing patients and families during such a difficult period of time. The patient and family are included in the care plan. Emotional, spiritual and practical support is given based upon the patient's family needs. Hospice considers dying to be a normal process of life.
